The pixel is the most granular unit of a digital visual object and is, in this sense, a quantitative construct. Africana is a summation of feeling expressed in material artifacts and works that relate to the history, and culture of Africa and the African diaspora. In its use of digital technology to express the wealth and depth of African culture, Pixel Africana straddles a number of polarities; old-new, north-south, analog-digital etc. while seeking new ways to see old things, or to visualize entirely new things, inspired by the old.
All this facilitated by new and emerging technologies which at their best empower who has the sensibility, to create work, even from the margins that project their concept of self and their hopes and aspirations into the world. It is increasingly possible to do so in high-fidelity at relatively low cost.
