The pixel is the most granular unit of a digital visual and, is in this sense, an abstract construct, a unit of measurement. Africana describes the collection of materials, objects, artifacts, works that relate to the history, geography, or culture of Africa and the African diaspora. Pixel Africana is the collection of works that seek ways to use digital technology to express the best of the wealth and depth of African culture, finding new ways to see old things, or to visualize entirely new things, inspired, to varying degrees, by the old.
Technology at its best is a useful facility for the artistic imagination, empowering who has the experience or at least the sensibility to create the work, even from the margins that declare their concept of self and their hopes and aspirations, and to do so in high-fidelity at relatively low cost, thus facilitating the propagation of a visual culture.
