The pixel is the most granular unit of a digital visual, and is in this sense, a quantitative construct. Africana is a summation of feeling expressed in material artifacts and works that relate to the history, and culture of Africa and the African diaspora. Sitting at the intersection of technology and culture, PixelAfricana straddles a number of polarities; old-new, north-south, analog-digital, craft and mass production etc. We use technology to (re)discover and express the wealth of African culture, seeking new ways to see old things, or to see entirely new things, inspired by the old.
Our work is also shaped by the semantic three-dimensionality of the African worldview - everything has meaning, nothing just is. Names have meanings and artifacts are embedded in stories.
The other imperative for our work is the development of a model of production that uses new and emerging technologies to create work in high-fidelity that is both sustainable and accessible, telling stories the whole time. If the artisans of yesterday had the tools of today, they would probably do the same.
